This Week in Startups
Trick or…Treat? Treat Please.
The latest application I found to be very useful, fun, and exciting is Treater. Treater is a mobile platform for users to send simple and inexpensive treats to their friends for their birthday, job promotion, just to say “hey!” or for whatever reason they want! Friends receive notifications via Facebook, email, or text message to pick up the gift at whatever merchant you chose. A treat could be anything from a case of beer, to a dozen cupcakes, or even a spa package. The recipient shows the merchant the Treat Card for whatever treat they received and it basically works as a credit card.
However, there is a caveat. Treater solely operates through Facebook and on your mobile device at this time. Developers are still in the works, figuring out how to get around using Facebook as the main platform.
Treater has raised $2.5 million in funding. They also has some hard hitters on the Board of Directors including Jack Davies, the founder and former President of AOL International; Fred Schaufeld, the Managing Director of SWaN Investments and the founder and Vice Chairman of NEW Asurion Corporation; and Gene Riechers, a former General Partner at Valhalla Partners.
Tech Fest Explodes in Berlin
Nearly 10,000 tech geeks, enthusiasts, hackers, and experts are gathering from August 21-26 to celebrate technology and startups around the world. Over the past couple days, Berlin’s famous Templehof Airport has been crowded with thousands of visitors getting ready for the festival of a lifetime. They’ve come prepared with backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, and their tech gear of course.
Campus Parties have been happening every year since 1997 and this year, Berlin is expected to hold the largest tech fest in the world’s history complete with workshops, mixers, speakers, DJs, and around the clock collaboration. The parties have been happening in countries including Spain, Brazil, and Mexico. The Berlin Campus Party is all about technology, ingenuity, science, and the web. Attendees stay at the airport and are provided with Wi-Fi, tents, showers, food, restrooms, and endless amount of collaboration and knowledge.
